Ten minutes to understand the machining process

In a narrow sense, mechanical processing is the cutting method of metal.

1. Turning

The turning process is performed on a lathe. The workpiece rotates during the main cutting movement, and the turning tool moves in a straight line or curve in the plane. It can process the inner and outer cylindrical surface, end surface, conical surface, forming surface and screw thread of the workpiece. When the cutter moves along the parallel rotation axis, it forms inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. The cutter moves along the oblique line that intersects the axis to form a conical surface. Turning can also process threaded surfaces, end planes and eccentric shafts. Turning rough machining accuracy is IT8-IT7, surface roughness is 6.3-1.6μm. During finishing, the roughness can reach 0.4-0.1μm in IT6-IT5. The turning tool is simple, the cutting process is relatively stable, and the productivity is high.


2. Milling

Milling is performed on a milling machine. The tool rotates during the main cutting movement and the workpiece is fixed. The milling cutter teeth are vibrated due to impact when cutting in and out, so the stability is relatively low, which limits the improvement of surface quality. It is usually used to process various forming surfaces such as planes, grooves, splines, gears and threads. Ordinary milling generally can only process planes, and fixed curved surfaces can also be processed with forming milling cutters. The CNC milling machine can use software to control several axes through the CNC system to link with a certain relationship to mill out complex curved surfaces. At this time, a ball head milling cutter is generally used. Using CNC milling machine can process complex workpieces such as impeller blades, mold core and cavity and other shapes. The machining precision of milling is IT8-IT7, and the surface roughness is 6.3-1.6μm.
